To Hijab or Not to Hijab - Is that the question?

This book illustrates that thoughts of the average Muslim teenager grappling with wearing the hijab, peoples opinions, and how to get by as a observant Sister in a predominantly Non-Muslim society without making cultural waves. Read a review of Randa Abdel-Fattah's book "Does My Head Look Big In This?". A great read for anyone wanting to delve into the mind of a young Muslim teen!

This post is in response to a question asked by one of our Non-Muslim followers: Does the Hijab (i.e. headscarf in particular) make a difference in terms of modesty?

As a Muslim woman, i believe that it does and that my Creator knows whats best for me. There are the traditional responses about how a woman's hair is her crowning glory, how it adds to her sexual appeal etc etc etc. And yes, our hair is a very beautiful part of us. Lets face it, men are visual creatures. Its a well-documented fact the men are wayyyy more visually stimulated sexually than women. Not to say that women dont appreciate an attractive male physique, just that men....REALLY appreciate ours, really really really... ;).

So keeping that fact in mind, as Muslim women we try to make it easier for men (arnt we nice?), by covering our bodies in public, including our hair. (please note: men are also required to dress and behave modestly after all, one of the Names for God(Allah) is The Equitable, this post however, focuses specifically on the headscarf for women).

The headscarf is just another piece of the proverbial "hijab" pie, and without it, our modesty would not be complete. It would be like wearing a skirt, headscarf and belly top....you would certainly attract sexual attention that way. Sexuality is a powerful tool, one that Muslim women wield quite skillfully. The headscarf is just another part of our choice to be modest in public. Our choice to decide who views us in a sexual manner. The headscarf is a sign of true women power!

Hijab Snags - Hijab at the Gym

Today exercise and staying in shape are apart of most people's routine. Gone are the post-permanent baby weight days where moms just kept the extra pounds referring to it as "extra character" or "more of me to love." Women nowadays, mom's especially want to look great pre and post baby(s). So hitting the gym, pool or bike trail has become common place. But with exercise, comes sweat. And a sweaty head with a damp scarf on isn't exactly comfortable, or cute.

How to remedy this problem? First, choose a hijab made of breathable material. Alot of the synthetic ones are going to hold moisture in and end up making you feel like you've been standing in the rain. 100% cotton is the best, but a stretchy jersey will also work pretty well. Second, choose a style that is comfortable and slip free. The last thing you need when on the treadmill is for your hijab to come loose. Then as you are simultaneously trying to slow the speed of the machine and reposition your scarf you stab yourself with a hijab pin! Ouch! So slip free, pin free styles work the best.

Our gym-worthy commendation: One or Two piece Al Amira Hijabs! These look like hoods, are are worn by simple pulling them over your head. No need for hijab pins or constant adjustment. Cool, and comfortable. You can run off your baby weight, weight train, or practice yoga to your heart's delight without ever worrying about hijab again. Happy trails!

Hijab Snags - My scarf is too sheer! Now what?

Hijab Snags is a new editorial section that we'll be offering to help fellow Sisters with common dresscode issues - like sheer scarves.

Senario: You're in hurry in the morning getting ready for school or work and as you're running out the door you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror....your scarf is see thru! Theres your hair peeking back out at you, as if to say...did you forget something???? Because it was darker in your room, you didnt notice just how sheer your scarf was when you were putting it on. Now in the light of day, you can see that you're going to have to turn around and go make an adjustment. As you hurry back to your room, you think...how didnt i notice this? what can i do in the future so that i dont have this problem again? I dont want to throw away this scarf, how can i make use of it while still observing hijab?

ANSWER: Consider layering a sheer scarf with a opaque one beneath it. Or wear an opaque underscarf and full neck cover. Or wear an al amira hijab beneath your sheer wrap.... there are soo many ways to overcome this problem with ease. Keep in mind that that the rest of your body should be covered appropriatly as well. :) Now in the future, the next time you grab a slightly-too-seethru hijab, you'll now know how to turn that piece into an appropriate hijab accessory. :)
